    Description

    W
atertown is a city in and the county set of Codington County, South Dakota with a population of 21,482 in 2010, making Watertown the fifth largest city in the state.   The city was founded in 1879 as a rail terminus when the
    Chicago & Northwestern Railroad
reactivated part of a line it had constructed to
    Lake Kampeska
.  Despite the prominence of rivers and lakes in the area, the city was named after Watertown New York, the hometown of brothers John E. and Oscar P. Kemp, two of the city’s founders.  The town’s name was originally planned to be named Kampeska. During the 1880s, Watertown prospered as a transportation hub after the railroads had been extended farther west.
    T
he card captures the “CO. H. MONUMENT” “ERECTED IN HONOR OF CO. H., 1st REG. SOUTH DAKOTA VOL. INF.”  It is a E.C. Kropp card and is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image.  The reverse is clean and has a great message from Chas Ritchie looking for Civil War Monument post cards, to Elsie Fredricks in Chicago.
The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.
Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.  Corrections appreciated.
