Description
TheBlack Hills are a small and isolated mountain range ricing from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming. The Black Hills encompass the Black Hills National Park, in southwestern South Dakota. The park protects 242,756 acres of sharply eroded buttes and pinnacles, along with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. People have inhabited the Badlands area for at least eleven thousand years. First came mammoth hunters, then nomadic tribes of bison hunters, the last of whom were the Lakota, who still live there. The great change came toward the end or the 19th century as homesteaders moved into South Dakota President Grover Cleveland nominated the Black Hills as a Forest Reserve in 1897 and in 1905 the Reserve became the Black Hills National Forest.

Sylvan Lake, located in Custer State Park, in the Black Hills, was created in 1881 when Theodore Reder built a dam, the Sylvan Lake Water Dam, across Sunday Gulch Creek. The lake area offers picnic places, rock climbing, small rental boats, swimming and hiking trails. It is also popular as a starting point for excursions to black Elk Peak and The Needles. A hotel was operated on the shore of the lake in the early 20th century.
